Doctoral Student Association

Doctoral Student Association President, UBC iSchool, 2024-2025 term

The Doctoral Student Association (DSA) is the student association of PhD students at the UBC iSchool; at any given time, there are between 15 and 25 PhD students in the organization. I was responsible for organizing monthly membership meetings and social events. With the assistance of a leadership team, I organized the monthly Threads speaker series, a lecture space for MLIS, MAS, MACL, and PhD students to share their work in an informal environment with their peers. I collaborated with the Doctoral Studies Chair, a faculty member, to organize two meetings between school leadership and the PhD students to hear student concerns and comments on the program. In this role, I had the opportunity to work closely with school leadership and fellow students, leading to a development of communication and facilitation skills. The lecture series regularly saw an attendance of 5-15 students, allowing graduate students to develop their own presentation skills in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Through this experience, I expanded my leadership, planning, and facilitation capacities.
